The Lagos State Government said on Friday that it had begun a total enforcement of the law prohibiting street trading and hawking.

#LagosHawkersPolicy: 15 Reactions to the Law Prohibiting Street Trading and Hawking

1. The state government said that the law would be implemented in every part of the state.

2. The renewed enforcement is in line with Section One of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003.

3. Hawkers and buyers are liable of the offence and would either pay a fine of N90, 000 or serve a six month jail term.

4. Plans are being concluded to roll out a campaign which would warn motorists and hawkers of the restrictions and the penalty for defaulters.

Nigerians have been reacting to this order on social media, and are essentially of the opinion that the government should provide alternative opportunities before enforcing such laws.
