#TodayInHistory: South Africa begins trial of Nelson Mandela on conspiracy

1963 –  South Africa begins trial of Nelson Mandela and 8 others on conspiracy. Known as the (Rivonia) Trial – “the trial that changed South Africa.” They were accused of participating in a treasonable conspiracy, inspired by international Communism, to overthrow the South African State by violent means. In what was arguably the most profound moment in the trial, Nelson Mandela made a speech in the dock in which he condemned the very court in which he was appearing as ‘illegitimate’.

Nelson Mandela alongside several others were found guilty on all four counts. Mandela spent 27 years and eight months in prison.

2001 – Actor Johnathon Schaech (32) weds actress Christina Applegate (29) at the three-acre Cree Estate in Palm Springs, California.

2013 – Singer Kelly Clarkson (31) weds talent manager Brandon Blackstock at Blackberry Farm in Walland, Tennessee.
