Today we celebrate renowned renowned politician, democrat and elder statesman Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as he turns 70!
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar was born November 25, 1946 to a Fulani trader and farmer Garba Abubakar, and his second wife, Aisha Kande.
Atiku Abubakar served as Vice-President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007, on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Before venturing into politics, he worked in the Nigeria Customs Service for twenty years, rising to become the Deputy Director. He retired in April 1989 and took up full-time business and politics.
Atiku first tried to be Nigeria’s president in 1992 when he ran in the Social Democratic Party (SDP’s) convention against late MKO Abiola. He stepped down for Abiola.
In 2007, he also contested for presidency but came third after eventual winner late ex-president Umar Musa Yar’Adua and now president Muhammadu Buhari. He tried again in 2011, vying for PDP ticket against erstwhile president Goodluck Jonathan and lost in the primaries. On February 2, 2014, Atiku left the Peoples Democratic Party and joined All Progressives Congress. On December 11, 2014, Atiku Abubakar contested for presidential ticket under the All progressive congress and lost to Muhammadu Buhari who emerged the party’s presidential flag bearer.
Recently Atiku Abubakar attacked president Buhari over his administration’s achievements,with claims that he had better ideas to defeat Boko Haram. Also this year Alhaji Atiku has made headlines following giving his daughters hands in marriage.
