Just weeks after his 17th birthday on February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was shot to death in what can be described as a senseless brutal racial attack, he would have turned 22 today. Once again we can’t help but say #BlackLivesMatter
The cause of his death? Walking home, in peace!”. Trayvon Martin, an unarmed teen was shot to death by Florida neighbourhood security George Zimmerman, in his defence he said he found the late six foot plus teen who had no criminal record “suspicious” and when he went to make a call to the police Martin knocked him down with a punch to the nose, repeatedly “slammed his head on the ground and tried to take his gun,” so he “had no choice” than to cock his gun.
Martin’s death propelled a global outcry against injustice and racism for millions of black Americans.
This was the predecessor to the Black Lives Matter movement. Similar killings by white police officers have also occurred ever since.
Ironically, George Zimmerman, the accused murderer was not initially arrested, later that changed, but he was later acquitted of murder by a jury. Needless to say, this further sparked racial tensions.
Yet another day and Trayvon Martin’s memory/ the fight for justice live on! Our hearts go out to the family.
