#DIY101: Do Away with Excess Shine on Your Face

A shiny complexion can be aggravating but on the bright side, oily skin tends to age better and develop fewer wrinkles than normal or dry skin. When the skin produces too much oil, it leads to whiteheads, blackheads, blind pimples and other skin irritations.

Here are few tips to help you take the shine off your face:

CLEANSE YOUR SKIN: Washing your face with warm water helps dissolve the oil more effectively than cold water.

Avoid creamy soaps; they have added moisturizers. Bar soaps like Neutrogena or Simple Soap are more effective, you can use cleansers that are specially formulated for oily skin.

Use a liquid face wash that contains alpha-hydroxy acids (ACA), such as citric acid, lactic acid or glycolic acid. The AHAs helps to wash away dead skin cells, reduce the oil in your pores and  they also combat infection.

Put a tablespoon of yarrow leaves/peppermint leaves/sage leaves in a cup, then fill with boiling water. Leave to steep for 30mins. Strain liquid and let it cool ,then dab it on your face.

Grind and sift 2 teaspoons of dry oats, then moisten with some witch hazel to form a paste. Use this mixture to massage your face, and then rinse with warm water. This helps to absorb oil and get rid of dead skin cells that clog pores.

Buttermilk is also very effective as it contains acids that help to get rid of dirt and tighten pores.

Massage your face with Buttermilk, leave for a few minutes, then rinse. This method can be repeated several times a week.

Powder your face with a loose powder, this helps to blot up excess oil.

Lemon juice can be used as a grease-cutting mask. Here’s a recipe:

Peel an apple and put it in a pan with enough water to cover; then simmer until it’s soft. Mash the apple, then add 1 tbsp of fresh lemon juice and 1 tbsp of either dried sage, lavender or peppermint. Apply the mixture to your face, leave it on for 5 minutes, then rinse with warm water.

Have an OIL-FREE face!
