1. Stay with Me by Ayobami Adebayo

A novel set in Nigeria, starting in the 1980’s, tells the heartbreaking story of Yejide and Akin. They meet and fell in love but are met with a lot of challenges from infertility, secrets, lies, cheating and infidelity.

The novel covers the subject of marriage, love and motherhood from a typical Nigerian family. After four years of marriage, Yejide is yet to get pregnant and doctors say there is nothing wrong with her. Then why is she not pregnant yet? Yejide’s family members show up one morning with another wife for Akin, thereby putting her under more pressure. Yejide goes from healers to fertility doctors all promising her a miraculous birth.

Akin has a secret he is keeping from his wife and family. The only person who knows this secret is Akin’s promiscuous brother, Dotun. Akin makes an abominable request from Dotun to save him from his secret.

This is by far one of my favourite Nigeria novels. Ayobami stirred different emotions with this book.

4. The Subtle Act of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

This is a book I will recommend for anyone. It has counter-intuitive approach to living a good life. The author uses his personal experiences to illustrate how the struggles of life is what gives life meaning and that the constant battle to be happy is what, in fact, makes us unhappy but that finding something important in life is the most productive use of your time and energy.

Every life has challenges but finding meaningful in the midst of the challenge will help sustain you. Pursuing something only reinforces that you lack it in the first place.
