When trying to lose weight or maintain your dream weight, the last thing anyone wants to do is starve (eat less) or count calories.

Not only is it not sustainable, but it is also a pain in the neck to deprive yourself of some meals that you enjoy.

The most effective way to keep off those extra calories is to burn the excess calories you have consumed all through the day, whether you are at the gym or at home.

Here some of the ways you can burn excess calories in your body:

1. HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) involves a short workout with quick bursts of energy and quicker resting periods.

It helps the body to keep burning energy long after the workout which leads the body to burn the fat in its reserve.

A 30 minutes HIIT workout will keep those fat melting and those calories crying.

2. Walking

This is one form of exercise that is highly underrated. Ceasing to live a sedentary lifestyle by walking everywhere; ditching the elevator for the stairs, walking to your bus stop or taking a stroll after dinner.

Invest in good sports watch and set a minimum goal of 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day, and watch the extra calories melt away with little or no effort.

Plus, if you live in the commercial capital of Nigeria, this is something that will soon be a norm for you, so you might as well get started!

3. Keep Your Body Moving

If you work a 9-5 job, it is very easy to restrict yourself to your sit. This will keep your calories where it should not be.

Instead of scrolling mindlessly through your phone during lunch break or after peak hours do 20 squats every 10 mins in the restroom.

Go charge your phone at the other end of your office so you have to walk a distant or brisk walk to get it when it rings. Drink a ton of water, this will keep you walking to the restroom while also flushing toxins from your body.

4. Play With Kids

Children are like livewires when it comes to their energy! Devoting 20 to 30 mins to play a game with an energetic kid or two is almost equivalent to having an hour session at the gym.

If you do not have kids, volunteer or charge your family, friends or neighbours to babysit their kids for them. The more kids you play with, the more calories you burn and you could get a little money on the side.

5. Join A Running Group

Running in groups is a fun way to exercise and it doubles as your social time, as you get to make friends with the other runners.

This also guarantees you push yourself harder, as running with people provides some ginger. If the group runs 10km and you usually run 5km you would end up pushing yourself to do more than you usually do while also keeping you accountable.
