Life can be full of ups and downs, hell and high waters, but there are certain things we can avoid that can help us sail through the turbulence.

1. Avoid putting work over family.

Work and family are both central to our daily lives. Conflict between work and family life is one of the most common sources of stress for working adults.

Still, no matter the kind of job you do or how much you get paid doing it, remember to check your priorities. It is family first. Your wife or husband and children are more important than everything in this world. You should always make out time to have nice moments with your family members. This is a way of giving back and building a great sense of belonging.

It’s not easy balancing work and home, but how well you manage this can make a significant difference to your relationship with your family.

2. Avoid smoking for fun

You must have heard about the dangerous effect of smoking and numerous warnings from the ministry of health in your country that smokers are liable to die young, yet you want to try it out for the fun of it?

This is one of the things you should never consider in life. Once you decide to smoke, especially for the fun of it, the possibility is you can become easily addicted to it, which is one dirty habit you should not indulge in.

Trying to join friends in having fun is a great idea, but the thing is, trying something unusual like smoking can get you trapped.

Many people who are addicted to smoking today, started from testing what it feels like to smoke and today they can’t help the rush that comes with smoking.

3. Avoid underestimating the power of extra

If the things you do are the things others do, then you should expect the same results they have. If you want more, you must be ready to give more. But how do you give more?

The difference between the champion and other contestants is the little extra the champion puts into what he does. The power of "extra" should never be underestimated.

It’s a classic principle that celebrates the value of hard work and promotes the importance of giving our best effort in all endeavours. Simply put, going the extra mile means doing more than is required or expected in service to excellence and a job well done.

As you move on in life, cultivate the habit of going an extra mile. It sets you above contemporaries. And consider this, if little sleep brings poverty, what do you think that extra hard work and tenacity would bring?

Go that one step further, not because you should but simply because you can.

4. Avoid mocking a person who has faith in God

Let's assume that you don't believe in a higher power (God), apparently, you are an atheist, that doesn't give you the guts to disrespect and mock someone who has placed faith in God. It is important to "have regards for what people believe in."

As you already know, respect is reciprocal. So, if you respect peoples’ opinions about what they believe in, you too will be respected for what you consider supreme and worthy of your praise.

This is not the ultimate life jacket to help you keep your head above water, but best believe, the aformentioned can help you lead a better life.

Stay productive.
