4 Simple Ways To Maintain A Healthy Long-Distance Relationship

Abiodun Adeoye

It is certainly true when we say "absence makes the heart grow fonder." Being in a long-distance relationship can be hard. It requires a lot of effort to keep the relationship going.

At some point, you become unsure of the relationship and both of you begin to get bored with the whole thing.

This article has been written to remedy this. It is possible to be in a long-distance relationship and still be happy. All you need to do is to follow our tips below.

1. Keep in touch every day

In a regular relationship, talking to your partner every single day may seem a bit excessive, but in a long-distance relationship, it is vital. A decrease in communication or the complete absence of it can make you both feel less secure in your relationship.

Make sure you contact each other every day, whether you use text messaging, e-mail, or phone calls. This will keep both of you constantly reassured that the other is committed to the relationship. It may seem like a chore sometimes, but when you can't see each other face-to-face every day, it's important to your relationship that you remain a real part of each other's day-to-day lives in whatever way you can.

2. Renew the romance continually

To keep a long-distance relationship alive and healthy, keep exchanging those little romantic gestures you exchanged when your romance was fresh and new - things like gifts, cards, and text messages. Be consistent about it.

If you make the effort to do romantic things like these even when your partner is far away, your partner will know that they really mean a lot to you.

3. Avoid arguments as much as possible

Differences of opinion crop up in relationships every now and then. This is normal, natural, and not something to be worried about. What matters is not that you disagree about something, but how you choose to deal with it.

If you and your partner encounter a disagreement while you're far apart, give your partner an uninterrupted 5 to 10 minutes to make their case for their side of the argument, then ask him to do the same for you. Be sure to establish at the beginning that while one of you is talking, the other will listen without judging or interrupting.

This technique gives each of you the opportunity to fully understand the other's viewpoint while preventing misunderstanding and poor communication from getting in your way. Once you've both heard each other out, you can work out a compromise.

4. Be patient

Like communication, patience is even more important to a long-distance relationship than it is to a regular relationship. No matter how much you miss your partner, pushing the relationship too far before you're both ready to go to the next stage will not do your relationship any good.

It's perfectly fine to discuss possibilities for your future, including your plans to live in the same area at some point, but you should both try to avoid pushing each other into any serious commitment that you're not prepared to make.

Maintaining a long-distance relationship would be far easier when you learn and practice the tips above.
