Nigerian officials report that more than 2,000 prisoners have escaped detention over the past five years following attacks from the deadly terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

They also state that many prison staff lost their lives in the attack.

It should be recalled that last month scores of prisoners escaped from the cells when jihadist stormed Mubi town. This week they reportedly blew a hole in a jail in Kogi State freeing dozens more.

It is believed that a total of 2,251 prisoners have escaped.

Figures released by the Nigerian Prisons Service reveal that at 30th June, the prison held about 57,000 male and female prisoners in 239 jails.
