Lead City graduate jailed for internet fraud

A first class graduate of Lead City University, Ibadan has been sentenced to a one year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.

The accused, one Olakunle Akanni was sentenced on the 4th of November by the Ikeja High Court in Lagos for defrauding 77 year old Diana Huizenga, an American woman of over 12,000 dollars through an internet love scam.

Judgment was also passed on his 30 year old accomplice, Adesina Akinsola how the sentencing of their co partner, Dele Oshuntogun also 30 was adjourned till the 17th of November, 2014.

Reports say that the convicts entered a plea bargain with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), therefore they received a one year sentence from Lawal-Akapo.

According to the judge, “The first defendant, Olakunle Akanni, is to pay the sum of N2 million which is the equivalent of $12, 820 to the victim (Huizenga), as restitution. Also, the third defendant, Akinsola, is to pay the sum of N500, 000 to the victim as restitution.”

They were also ordered to write an undertaken, which would be submitted to the EFCC, promising to be well behaved.

Mrs Zainab Ettuh , the EFCC counsel, speaking on the case, revealed that the said offences were committed between December 2010 and February 2012 in Lagos.

Olakunle Akanni falsely presented himself to Huizenga as one Robert Lewis, a white American living in Nigeria, who was in love with her, she said.

“The convicts used the “love scam” to fleece the woman and even invited her to come to Nigeria with $90,000 before they were apprehended”. She added.
