Injustice! Magistrate sends mother of three to Kirikiri for scratching her car

Yvonne Williams

An accusation has been leveled by an Instagram user, @steel_member against a Lagos magistrate, Funke Sule-Hamzat, of sending a mother of three, Yetunde Osijo, to be detained at the Kirikiri prison for scratching her car on Monday.

According to the Instagram user, the driver of Sule-Hamzat, who is a magistrate at the Ogudu Magistrate court, allegedly bumped into Osijo’s car but the magistrate ordered that she should be arrested, took her to her court and promptly ordered that she should be detained at Kirikiri without giving her the opportunity to get a lawyer to represent her.

steel_memberThanks so much @instablog9ja Magistrate Sule Hamzat has just ordered that Yetunde Osijo be locked up in kirikiri prison for scratching her car earlier today. However, it was the Magistrate’s driver that was liable. At the time when the minor accident occured, Yetunde assumed she was asked to leave only to realize that Mag. Sule Hamzat’s car was chasing and bumping her car from behind. She stopped her car and the magistrate ordered that Yetunde Osijo be detained and was today tried without a lawyer representing her at the court in Ogudu WITHOUT the presence of the driver of the Magistrate in court. In a speedy development, she was already taken to Kirikiri in a Black Maria. She is a mother of 3 years old twin boys, and she was on her way to take one of them to the hospital. Fellow Nigerians, please let’s not allow a Magistrate abuse the use of her office by detaining Yetunde in kirikiri. She is NOT A CRIMINAL. Let’s not allow Yetunde sleep in Kirikiri or in any jail. Say no to misuse of power and unlawful detention. 21st March 2016. Please repost. Thanks’

Another Instagram user with the handle @oluwaseundogbeybenjamin indicated that he witnessed Osijo’s arraignment yesterday.

“It’s very true o. I was a witness. This is total abuse of office. [the woman] was paraded throughout yesterday as though she went to rob a bank…”
