Itohan Ferguson

How often do you pay attention to businesses on Awolowo road, while being stuck in traffic? If you do look on either side of of the road, you are sure to just stare absent minded at these structures, as you assuage your rising impatience at the slow moving traffic.

When you think Awolowo road, you never think small and medium businesses, you think fuel stations, banks and nasty traffic. However, beyond the traffic, the noise, fuel stations, banks and big corporations, are small and medium businesses, littered on that long stretch of road, whose services make our lives better and comfortable.

Awolowo road could pass off as the commercial vein of Lagos, when many are quick to say, Lagos has no city center, I am likely to point to Awolowo road.

Lagos night lovers are not neglected from what Awolowo has to offer within its coffers, because on Awolowo road Ikoyi are   several night life spots, you can find the famous club 57, Cocoon and for night life connoisseurs with a more eclectic taste, there is a lounge for Yoruba live band lovers. Certainly, there is  something for everyone.

Stores on Awolowo road may cost from 3 million -10 million Naira, depending on shop size and the real estate agents you have dealings with. In my curiosity, I needed to know if shop owners make enough to pay for these exorbitant rents. One of such  businesses I had the privilege of conversing with is the ever enduring cosmetics company, Yinka Bodyline.

From my conversation with the manager of this cosmetics line, having a small or medium business on Awolowo road, is largely dependent on the service you offer. “If the services you offer are essential to people across board, undoubtedly, owning a business on this long stretch of busy road is very lucrative”.

Awolowo road Ikoyi, is not only accessible, but there is an opportunity to serve all blends of customers; from those who live and work in Ikoyi, to the mildly curious customers, even extended to those who come all the way across the bridge from the mainland.

The manager hinges the success of the brand to the fact, it is built upon the foundation of time and its strong reputation, Yinka Bodyline has been operational for 10 years and many have come to trust the brand for it dealings in genuine cosmetic products.
