Expert urges FG to focus more on agriculture

Yvonne Williams

Financial expert, Mr Bamidele Agbadua, on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to harness the nation’s agricultural potentials to cushion the effects of the crashing crude oil prices on the economy.

Agbadua, a Principal Lecturer, Banking and Finance Department, Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Auchi that agricultural sector remained a veritable key for unlocking the nation’s economic growth.

He said that agriculture had the potentials of tripling the current national earnings in spite of the recorded decline in crude oil prices.

“We need to increase our agricultural production; a lot has to be done to diversify the economy.

“We had lived without crude oil; before we had the groundnut pyramids, palm trees and so on.

“I will appreciate if government can go beyond crude oil. We can now see the consequences of building our economy around crude oil.

“So, they should go back to the drawing board and change the situation, we have many fertile lands,’’ he said.

Agbadua also appealed to the federal government to focus more on agriculture because of the nation’s good climate and rich soil.

“Government should encourage commercial agriculture because we have the fertile land, good weather and accessible roads,” he said. (NAN)
