OMG! FG withdraws N2.45bn fraud charges against former Bayelsa Governor, Timipre Sylva

The corruption charges filed against former Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva have been withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The N2.45 billion fraud charge against Sylva was withdrawn on Monday, June 1, 2015.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had re-arraigned Sylva on the allegations, on May 18, before Justice Evoh Chukwu of the Abuja Federal High Court.

However, the DPP’s lawyer, on Monday, moved a motion asking Justice Chukwu to dismiss all the charges against the former governor.

The EFCC, represented by its Assistant Director, Legal and Prosecution, J.O Ojogbane, however denied being party to the decision to drop the charges.

Sylva has been discharged and acquitted by the court and the EFCC has been ordered to return the former governor’s passport to him.

The EFCC later released a statement saying that it had consolidated the charges against the former governor and would file new charges in the future.

The development has attracted wide shock with many accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of being behind the decision to withdraw the charges against Sylva.
