The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has threatened to resume hostilities if members of the National Assembly refuse to reduce the huge salaries and allowances they earn.
MEND also asked Nigerians to hold the 8th National Assembly responsible if it went ahead with its threat to resume hostilities over the lawmakers’ huge salaries.
There has been an ongoing debate on the salaries and allowances of members of the National Assembly with Nigerians calling for a slash in the earnings of the lawmakers.
But the Niger Delta militant group warned in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, that the people of the oil rich region would not cater to the lawmakers needs to the detriment of the people.
“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has observed with disgust, the brazing disregard for the feelings of the Change-Seeking masses by very selfish members of the Eight National Assembly.
“These wicked individuals appropriate to themselves huge and absurd Salaries/Allowances at the expense of the millions of hapless Nigerians who have not been paid for months, their salaries, pensions and other due benefits they deserve.
“If the Lawmakers refuse to make the necessary adjustments needed to accompany the needs of the masses and the Niger Delta region, it may lead to the resumption of hostilities and Nigerians should hold the Eight National Assembly responsible should that happen. Enough is enough,” the statement sent via electronic mail on Monday read.
Explaining that Nigerians would not tolerate the ostentatious lifestyle of the National Assembly members, MEND stated that the main objective of the national lawmakers was to enrich themselves and waste the nation’s scarce resources.
“Nigerians refuse to tolerate this ostentatious lifestyle of our lawmakers whose main objectives, it seems, is to enrich themselves and carelessly spend scarce resources.
“The Niger Delta people refuse to pamper and cater to the needs of these thieving Assembly rogues to its detriment,” the militant group stressed.
