Maiduguri Mosque Bombing Update: Death Toll Rises to 26

Happenings

At least 26 people were confirmed killed after a suicide bomber blew himself up in a mosque situated close to the Federal High Court in Maiduguri, the capital of Boko Haram-ravaged Borno State, on Friday.

Reports said another attacker was shot dead by army personnel who were deployed to the area shortly after the explosion.

A Maiduguri resident who spoke to Happenings Friday afternoon said officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, responded swiftly to the attack to evacuate bodies and take the injured to nearby hospital.

The attack reportedly occurred during Fajr, the first Islamic prayer around 5 a.m, according to the resident.
NEMA officials said about 26 people have died, that is an additional 20 more bodies than the 6 first reported after the news broke in the morning.

Boko Haram Islamic sect has not claimed responsibility for the attack, but the resident told Happenings the tactics used were starkly similar to those typically deployed by the fundamentalist group.
