The Born0 State Government has distributed metal detectors to Imams in the state to screen worshippers as one of the ways to checking the menace of suicide bombers in the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Borno State Governor on Media, Mallam Isa Gusau, after a meeting held on Sunday in Maiduguri, to plan strategies at stemming attacks on mosques in the state.

Gusau said metal detectors were distributed to some of the Imams who were asked to use it to screening worshippers coming into their mosques.

The meeting held behind closed doors was at the instance of the state Governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima. It had in attendance the governor, Heads of the Army, Police and Department of State Security in the state.

Also at the meeting were the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, Imams of mosques in Maiduguri, Jere and surrounding areas as well as district and ward heads.

In the statement, Gusau said the meeting was held to discuss crucial security issues aimed at developing fresh strategies to prevent Boko Haram insurgents from attacking worshippers at predawn prayer meetings in mosques in the state.

He said the governor told the participants that similar meetings would be held by the Emirs of Biu and Shani where imams would be sensitised against the recent threats so that they would not be caught unawares.

The Shehu of Borno, was also said to have told the gathering that the governor had shown great wisdom in summoning the meeting. He noted that “every son and daughter of Borno has a role to play in fighting the Boko Haram insurgency.”
