Update: Couple who allegedly tortured 7 year-old son to death face murder charges

The Bayelsa couple who allegedly tortured their seven year old son, Joseph Ideisy Zikeme, to death in Akaba, Bayelsa state could face murder charges at the end of the on-going investigation, Vanguard reports.

This was revealed by the Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, Bayelsa state chapter, Mrs Dise Sheilaogbise – Erhisere Sheilaogise-Erhisere, who also works at the state Directorate of Public Prosecutions said that everyone who was involved in the torture and eventual death of Joseph would not go scot-free.

Meanwhile, 29 years old Erueke John, the biological mother of the deceased has spoken out about her son’s death. She said her son was tortured after a mushroom church in Yenagoa alleged that he was a wizard .This led to him being tied to a stake and chunks of his flesh were sliced off in an attempt to exorcise him , thereby leading to his death . I left the fathers house while I was pregnant with the boy , because he was beating me and was also into illegal sale of hard drugs.

Joseph Zikeme was brought in dead to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Yenagoa, his body covered in bruises. This led to the hospital management to alert the police who then arrested the couple. The boy’s father, Ideisy Zikeme, and his step-mother, Eunice Zikeme, have being transferred to the homicide section of the states police command for further investigation .

The FIDA Chairperson, Sheilaogise-Erhisere says it is a murder case. A yet-to-be-identified pastor, who is alleged to have incited the duo claiming that the boy is possessed, could also be arraigned for murder .

She said while some abused children are fortunate not to die, they usually escape with lifelong scars and disabilities. She further urged parents to be more responsible for their children’s welfare and protect them from physical assault.
