ASUU Succumbs To Pressure, Suspends Three-Month Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has called off its three-month strike after tremendous pressure from the Federal Government.

ASUU has also directed all university lecturers across the country to resume academic activities on Friday, February 8, 2019, with immediate effect.

Recall that before Monday, President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, to end the hard-biting three-month-old strike of university lecturers on Monday, February 4, 2019.

Following ASUU’s stiff resistance to pressure to call off the strike, the meeting with the Federal Government was dragged till today, Thursday, before the strike was finally suspended.

The pressure on ASUU to call off the strike is an attempt by the Federal Government to avoid any problem that may jeopardize the chances of President Muhammadu Buhari winning the forthcoming presidential elections.
