The former Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said that Northerners are the biggest looters in all the regions in Nigeria.
The assertion was made on social media as a reaction to the comment made by Nasir El-Rufai, the Governor of Kaduna State.
Governor El-Rufai had, in his speech at a conference, commented that Northerners were holier than other Nigerians in the discourse of cybercrime and other financial related crimes.
While rendering his speech at the Northern Youth Summit organised by the Northern Hibiscus Initiative in Kaduna, El-Rufai made it known that the north may be the hub of retrogression and illiteracy in the country but it should celebrate the fact that Northerners hardly get arrested for internet fraud and other financial crimes.
The Kaduna State Governor said, “Nigeria consists of two countries; there is a backward, less educated and unhealthy northern Nigeria, and a developing, largely educated and healthy southern Nigeria.”
Furthermore, he compared the Northern part of Nigeria to Afghanistan, claiming that the region was similar to a country at war.
He advanced by analysing the retrogressive state of the region with statistic details stating thus, “We have the largest number of poor people in the world, most of them in northern Nigeria. Nigeria also has the largest number of out of school children, virtually all of them in Northern Nigeria.”
In his conclusion, he stated that while the north takes pride in the positives of Agriculture and the richest man in Africa being a Northerner, the region should also celebrate the fact that it has only a small number of fraudsters and financial criminals.
However, Fani-Kayode, countered in a tweet saying, “Northerners have looted the treasury over the last 59 years of our nation’s existence more than ANY other group of Nigerians.”
