Itse Sagay To Federal Government: Release El-Zakzaky!

Margaret Solace

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay, has expressed his dissatisfaction at the prolonged detention of Sheikh Ibraheem El-ZakZaky, the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The DSS had arraigned El-Zakzaky in December 2015 with criminal charges for unlawful assembly, culpable homicide, and disruption of public peace.

Meanwhile, the members of the association had earlier stormed the National Assembly in demonstration, to press for the interference of the lawmakers in favour of their leader’s discharge.

Forty suspects were then arrested after the protest resulted in a skirmish with security agents that left five police officers wounded and a number of vehicles destroyed.

While reacting with disgust, Prof. Sagay recommended that El-Zakzaky be released on bail in accordance with court orders, as it was unlawful to continually detain the IMN leader without trial.

He said, “I have already expressed this opinion almost a year ago that in the absence of anything that I know, apart from the fact that everybody is aware of, I think the best option is to release him, even if it is on bail.

“Except if there is something we don’t know, I really don’t see why he is being kept for all these years. That is my sincere view.”
