Policemen engaged in a 30-minute fierce gun battle with armed robbers in Idemili North Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State on Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, at about 9:30 pm on Saturday evening, the suspected armed robbers blocked Idemili/Alor road and began robbing passengers in a commercial bus. The police patrol team on stop-and-search duty at Idemili road were immediately alerted of the ongoing robbery. The police officers in Anaku division alongside operatives of Puff Adder rushed to the scene and engaged the robbers in a shoot-out before they fled.
The police spokesperson for Anaku division, Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the robbery. He also narrated the event to the press, assuring them that the police were on a wide manhunt to arraign the culprits responsible for the robbery.
"At about 9:30 pm, Puff-Adder operatives along with the patrol team attached to Anaku Division while on stop-and-search duty around Ideani in Idemili North LGA received a distress call that robbers had blocked Ideani/Alor road and robbing passengers inside a commercial bus.
“Following the report, the police operatives rushed to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun battle which lasted for over thirty minutes, forcing them to jettison their robbery operation and flee into the bush.
“Exhibits recovered at the scene include one cut to size pump action gun and a Mitsubishi L300 bus with Reg NO. XD660JJ belonging to one Onyeka Mgbatogu of opposite St Mary Church Awuda, Nnobi in Idemili North LGA snatched at gunpoint.
“Manhunt of fleeing suspects is still ongoing in order to arrest and bring them to justice,” Haruna said.
