Boat Accident In Niger Claims 15 Lives, 35 More Missing

Bernard Femi

15 people, who were involved in a boat accident at River Malale in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, were confirmed dead by the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Recent reports suggest that the people involved in the accident were returning from a small community in Ngaski LGA of Kebbi State to Sabo Yumu in Borgu when the incident took place.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Ibrahim Inga, Director General of SEMA, said the agency received the call for help late, adding that they heard about the incident a few days after it occurred.

Mr. Ibrahim further stated that, according to information revealed to him, over 50 passengers on board were thrown overboard when the boat capsized in the middle of River Malale.

Some passengers that were on board the boat have been rescued while the search for 35 others is ongoing. In his statement, Inga noted that the cause of the fatal accident was due to overloading of the boat and poor visibility.

He said, however, that efforts by the government towards the enactment of regulatory measures to checkmate activities of transporters at sea would be intensified, one of which is enforcing the use of life jackets. He added that more safety jackets would be made available to reduce the number of victims in subsequent incidents.
