An old generation bank in Iju-Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Council Area of Ondo State was attacked by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.
According to reports, the armed robbers, who were 6 in number, stormed the bank in the early hours of Tuesday, August 6, 2019, and opened fire on people.
Staff of the bank along with customers who came for regular transactions were affected by the incident as the armed robbers attacked and injured a number of them.
According to an eyewitness who was present at the incident, some security agents, including men from the 32 Artillery Brigade, engaged the robbers in a gun battle but were unable to stop them from making away with a huge sum of money.
Speaking to the reporters, the eyewitness said: "They have just attacked the bank in Iju-Itaogbolu and everybody is scampering for safety. I saw many people injured and I am also aware that they killed some people whose identities I cannot ascertain at the moment.”
The attack was further confirmed by Unide Adie, the Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, in a statement he made to reporters.
He said, "The robbery occurred few hours ago in Iju and we have deployed our officers to the scene. Our officers engaged the armed robbers in a gun duel and they abandoned their vehicle and ran inside the bush. Although the details of the attack are still sketchy, our men have entered the bush and are on the trail of the robbers.”
