Retrial Of Governorship Election Ordered By The Court Of Appeal In Lagos State

Following a petition challenging the results of the Lagos State gubernatorial elections from the governorship candidates of Alliance for Democracy and Labour Party, Owolabi Salis and Ifagbemi Awamaridi, a Court of Appeal in Lagos State has asked that the case challenging the victory of the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, at the gubernatorial elections held earlier this year, be returned to the election petition tribunal for a retrial.

The tribunal was ordered to continue the hearing of the petition after a unanimous decision was taken by the five panel-members of the court.

On Owolabi's appeal, the court stated: "From the record, it is clear that the tribunal was wrong to have declared the petition as an abandoned petition. The case is to be remitted to the lower court for expeditious hearing of the matter.”

In a related but separate appeal by the Labour Party's Ifagbemi Awamaridi who also challenged the dismissal of its appeal against the victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the 2019 elections, the court also found merit in the case and ordered a quick retrial.
