Three persons have been allegedly killed and several others badly injured by soldiers in Isheri Olofin community, Kara area of Ogun State.

The killing, according to reports, occurred on Monday night during the Isheri Day Festival, which is celebrated annually in the community.

Two soldiers escorting a man called Tiri, said to be the son of Kara market owner, were violently pushing others at the festival to create access for their boss when they were confronted by one of the community leaders.

“I told them that what they were doing was not proper. I told them to stop harassing other participants in the festival. The soldiers were two and they work as bodyguards to Tiri.

“The next thing, one of them pointed his gun at me and people gathered there. Tiri was also drunk because the three of them came in drunk. After the disagreement, they left and about 300 metres away, we heard gunshots. They just opened fire on people," the community leader said.

One of the victims was said to have been hit by a stray bullet and died instantly, while two others died in the hospital from gunshot wounds.

A spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Tuesday, explained that contrary to reports that three people died, only two deaths have so far been reported at the Divisional Police Station in the area.

While stating that investigations have unraveled the true circumstances that led to the killing, Oyeyemi promised the press and public that those behind the killing would be brought to book. He then called on residents of the community to remain calm.

No arrests have been made in relation to the incident but the police have given the assurance that they are working round the clock and further updates will be convened to the press as soon as investigations are concluded.
