Austin Papi

Governor Buni of Yobe State has directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide quick assistance to flood victims in the state within 24 hours.

He made this known during a visit to Chumbusko village in the state. The village was one of the most affected areas, and the governor along with other diplomats went to commiserate with the flood victims in the community.

The Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, who was one of the diplomats who made the condolence visit, thanked the Yobe government for their prompt response to the flood in the area. He also expressed his confidence in Governor Buni who, according to him, had "empathy for the people.”

He assured everyone present of the assistance of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the complete dredging of the Kumadugu-Yobe River, which was stopped at 50 percent from July last year. He also pledged the sum of N10 million for the upkeep of the displaced persons.

The SEMA Executive Secretary, Dr. Muhammad Goje, claimed that over 4,000 households in 13 local government areas of the state were affected by the flood. The Executive Secretary also explained that so far, 2,000 households have been provided with basic amenities, including carpentry woods and nails, mats and mosquito nets, bundles of roofing sheets, blankets, kettles, buckets, bags of rice, cooking oil, children wears and toiletries.

Governor Buni, while addressing the affected persons, urged them to see the disaster as only a test from God, saying they should be thankful in every given situation. He further urged them to keep praying for God to bless the rainy season and make it productive for the people.
