The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced that major construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will begin on September 2 and will be completed by December 15, 2019.

The Director of Federal Highways, South-West, Funsho Adebiyi, made the announcement during an inspection of the interstate route. While he inspected the machinery for construction, he made preparations with all road agencies to create alternative routes to prevent traffic gridlock on the interstate road.

“Work is starting on September 2 and by December 15 we should be through,” Adebiyi stated.

“Palliative work has been done to ensure smooth movement; those coming in and out of Lagos would have at least two lanes at every point in time.

“We have instructed our contractors to make adequate signage available, as well as lightening systems, reflective materials and other diversion signs to cope with night trips.”

He also pleaded for tolerance from the public, stating that inconveniences are most likely to occur during this period and should be tolerated to ensure that the roads are properly constructed for the people.

“I want to beg that all road users should please comply with these simple rules, drive safely, drive slowly especially around diversions.”

“We need this diversion for us to work due to the high volume of traffic around this portion of the road.

“We will do everything to complete the road within the time frame given but we need cooperation from everyone, including residents of the area. They should tolerate us during the period,” he said.

Warning motorists against breaking traffic rules during the construction process, Adebiyi noted that road users who are caught driving against traffic rules would be dealt with.

He further stated that provision had been made to tow faulty vehicles off the road during the period.
