Immigration Gets Access To Interpol Database

Jayfred Ugo

Mr. Muhammad Babandede, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has announced that criminals would no longer have easy access to the country, as NIS has now been granted full access to Interpol database information.

Babandede made this announcement during the August edition of Lunch Time Reform Seminar organised by the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) on Thursday in Abuja.

According to him, the information in Interpol’s database will help Nigeria track and run security/profile checks on immigrants before being granted access into the country.

“This notice became necessary due to the increasing activities of fraudsters that have remained unrepentant. After several arrests and arraignment they continue to open fake recruitment sites through which they defraud unsuspecting citizens of their money,” he said.

He added that the data access would help curb international fraudulent activities in the country, noting this would make it possible for any alleged criminal or suspect anywhere in the world that is wanted globally to be barred from entering or doing business in Nigeria.

Nigeria had previously requested for access to Interpol’s database but the request was denied. However, after the case of the 80 Nigerians involved in cybercrimes emerged, Nigeria was granted immediate access to Interpol’s database.

The comptroller general also warned Nigerians against patronising fake recruitment sites.
