Police Release 123 Northerners Arrested In Lagos

Bernard Femi

123 people from the northern part of Nigeria have been released by the Lagos State Police Command after their truck was intercepted by the State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offenses Task Force a few days ago.

The truck, with registration number, Jigawa HJA 680 XA, was intercepted at the Moshalashi area of Agege by the Task Force and the male passengers were all rounded up.

DSP Bala Elkana, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the men were profiled and nothing incriminating was found on any of them.

According to him, the reason for the interception was the manner in which they came into town, which raised their suspicion. They decided to intercept them to ask questions. Most of the passengers were living in Lagos and were returning from the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Mr. Yinka Egbeyemi, Chairman of the Task Force, said the interception was a proactive one to mitigate any attack that might be planned for the state, adding that the force was tipped off by the public about the truck

The Hausa community of the state had earlier demanded for the release of the passengers, and after proper investigations were carried out, they were released.

The Lagos State Government explained that it was a routine check to ensure proper security.
