Opeyemi, wife of Omoyele Sowore, the co-convener of #RevolutionNow movement and publisher of online news platform, Sahara Reporters, recently led a group of protesters to the United Nations plaza in New York.

The protest was staged over the detention of Sowore by the Department of State Services (DSS).

Reports from CNN suggest that Mrs Sowore went to the UN office, where President Muhammadu Buhari was attending the 74th General Assembly. There, she convened with the protesters to call for the release of her husband.

In her interview with CNN, she said:

"It is very sad to see the course of action this has taken in the past one and a half months, especially for someone that was calling for a change for the better in Nigeria.

"It's been almost two months since he walked out the door. Children are resilient in times like this, but they miss their father and are really hoping for his safe return."

Opeyemi Sowore informed CNN that she had been allowed only two conversations with her husband since his arrest in August. Sowore was charged by the federal government for treasonable felony and use of unconstitutional means for protest.

The former presidential candidate was scheduled to hold a peaceful protest in Lagos but was arrested in his hotel room at midnight by DSS officials. He was recently granted bail but is still in detention.
