Senator Ali Ndume Cautions FG On Increment Of VAT

Bernard Femi

The 9th assembly senator and Chairman of Senate Committee on Army, Senator Ali Ndume, has expressed his concern over the Federal Government's plan to increase Value Added Tax by 2.2%.

The lawmaker made his concerns known while responding to questions after his meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He noted that the increase will result in suffering among the poor masses.

Senator Ndume had earlier proposed a bill imploring the government to increase tax on Communication Service. This bill has passed the first reading in the parliament. The senator has now advised the government to dump the idea of increasing the existing VAT from 5.2% to 7.2%.

“It is true that the government is not expanding the revenue base or the tax... that is why I am thinking that anybody that is using telephone here would want to just talk and pay for it, of course, but right now, none of you will say this is what I am paying for telephone; if it tells you one minute remaining, you start looking for any recharge card,” Ndume stated.
