Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, cried at a forum recently organized by the United Nations on the attainment of sustainable development.

The Emir broke down in tears as he narrated a story of a woman whose child died two hundred metres away from the palace.

“I was sitting, receiving this report and there were all these women who were waiting and I heard a very loud scream so I sent someone to check. The person who I sent to check, came back with tears in his eyes. And what had happened?' he narrated.

"There’s a children’s hospital about two hundred metres away from the palace. A woman whose child was sick had come to ask for money to go and buy the drugs and while she was waiting for her turn to ask for support, the baby died in her arms.”

Sanusi, who was emotional at that point, stressed that the amount needed was less than five dollars and mentioned that it happened every day in the country. He noted that the less privileged do not have access to basic amenities.
