President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sum of 10 billion naira for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State.
The president, who made this known on his verified Twitter page on Thursday, stated that the infrastructure investments have to be prioritized in every part of the country despite the limited resources.
“I have approved the sum of 10 billion naira for an Intervention fund for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
“I have the assurance of the Minister of Aviation that the work will be done speedily and to the highest standards,” he tweeted
Recall that the airport, which serves as the only international airport in the southeast region, was announced for closure in August, to allow for reconstruction. Since then, it has been closing 6 pm daily due to the absence of airfield lighting and approach light.
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), however, inspected the airport and discovered that its bad condition has stopped it from generating revenue for the federal government.
