The Oyo State Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) recently destroyed 40 hectares of hemp plantation in the Oluyole Local Government Area of the state.

Mr Ralph Igwenagu, the state NDLEA Commander, noted that six hectares of hemp plantation had been previously discovered and destroyed at the Oke Ogun area of the state. He stated that the recent discovery was evidence of hemp cultivation by many farmers.

The commander, who revealed that five suspects had been arrested, urged community leaders to stop giving out their lands for the cultivation of hemp and other dangerous substances.

“The owners of the plantation are not from the village, but they got the land from the village head.

“If the villagers refuse to give them the land, the people will not get land to cultivate again and eventually they will leave the illegal business,” he said.

He further urged residents to cooperate with the agency by reporting any trace of hemp cultivation in their environment.
