The National Examinations Council (NECO) has sacked 70 of its staff over forgery of academic certificates.

According to the Head of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani in Minna, Niger State, the dismissal occurred after the council management engaged in the verification of certificates of staff. The committee that was constituted submitted a report that 70 of NECO staff had fake certificates.

It was learnt that the schools that the dismissed staff claimed to have received certificates from were duly contacted by NECO. The schools denied having certified them.

The statement reads:

"The Certificate Verification Committee carried out its assignment diligently by inviting all staff with questionable credentials to appear before it, during which some staff actually attested that their certificates were fake.

"The committee also contacted the schools and institutions the affected staff claimed to have attended and the schools and institutions denied having certificated them.”

The dismissal, which affected mostly junior staff and substantive senior staff, was said to be the first phase as further verification will still reveal more people.
