Nigerian Doctor Makes Breakthrough With Breast Cancer Treatment

Funsho Akinwale

Dr Oludare Adeyemi, a consultant radiation oncologist at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, on Wednesday, announced a breakthrough in breast cancer treatment.

Briefing newsmen in Benin, the Edo State capital, Adeyemi disclosed that he had just treated a breast cancer patient without mastectomy (the process of removing the breast because of cancer).

He described the treatment as microseed treatment, which requires using radioactive seeds, and urged women to go for regular screening to detect the disease early

“This microseeds treatment is the first in the whole of Africa. It has come to Africa through Nigeria,” he said.

Adeyemi further stated that the treatment takes just a day compared to the conventional radiotherapy which takes a month to be completed.

“It must be emphasised that microseeds treatment procedure is only appropriate for now for early breast cancer,” he added.

He advised women on prevention tips, saying they should always go for breast examination and awareness, exercise most days of the week, maintain a healthy weight and choose a healthy diet.
