Professor Olajide Lawal, the returning officer of the election, announced Senator Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the Kogi West Senatorial election at the collation centre on Saturday.
Not satisfied with the February 23 poll won by Senator Dino Melaye, Adeyemi had filed a suit and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducted another poll following the Supreme Court’s annulment of the February poll.
According to the professor, Adeyemi polled a total of 88,373 votes against Senator Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 62,133 votes.
He stated that after the November 16 rerun election, another poll was conducted by INEC and Adeyemi beat Melaye by a margin of 20,570 votes but it was lower than the number of annulled votes in 53 polling units across the senatorial district.
Dino Melaye will be replaced by Adeyemi at the National Assembly.
