Agitation For Political Reform Should Be Stopped – Olisa Agbakoba

Yusuf Dotun

The ex-President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has stated that the call for political reformation should be halted in Nigeria, as this agitative call has been on for a long period without a positive result.

Agbakoba made this call while speaking at a press conference in Lagos, as he explained that the call for restructuring has begun to birth negative effects in the country rather than help.

The former NBA president noted that President Muhammadu Buhari clearly has no belief in political restructuring, and so, the more we agitate for reform, the more we continue to suffer.

However, he clamoured for a new philosophy and suggested that sub-national and elite groups, including Afenifere, Ijaw National and Ohanaeze, suspend their activism for a political reform so the country could progress.

The erudite legal practitioner went on to propose cooperative federalism as an alternative to political restructuring, as he presented a document, titled ‘Legal and Institutional Restructuring for Next Nigeria’, which he said would generate over 10 million jobs for Nigerian citizens if the ideas therein are implemented.

Agbakoba said that all regions in Nigeria need to cooperate and pursue one purpose, while we “neglect who is exercising what power.”

The senior advocate commended President Buhari’s border closure policy, as it will reduce the dumps thrown into the country.
