Kidnapped NLC Chairman Regains Freedom

Recall, Mr Ben Ukpepi, the Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Cross River State chapter, was kidnapped six days ago from his residence by unidentified gunmen.

According to confirmed reports, the NLC Boss has now regained freedom from his captors.

Mr Ukpepi was released on Sunday evening to the delight of his family members who waited for almost a week to see their relative. He was kidnapped in his residence in Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River, on Tuesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Irene Ugbo, who confirmed the release of the NLC chairman through a telephone interview with reporters on Monday in Calabar, disclosed that the Chairman was released after a joint effort from a team of security agencies in the state.

According to DSP Irene Ugbo, the Chairman is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Calabar. The PRO, however, failed to disclose if any ransom was paid for the release, but added that he was released unhurt.

“As we speak, the Chairman of NLC was released last night. He is currently receiving medication in a hospital in Calabar,” she said.

Also, Dr Alfred Mboto, Permanent Secretary on Security in Governor’s Office, told NAN that the Chairman was released unhurt.

The State Security Adviser for Southern Cross River, Mr Ani Esin, who supported the statement of the Police said that the NLC Chairman representing Cross River state, Ben Ukpepi, was released by the joint efforts of government and security agencies in the state.
