FG Demolishes Fences Under Lagos Bridge

Austin Papi

The Nigerian Government has begun the demolition of illegal structures, fences and stalls under some bridges in Lagos, on Friday.

The demolition exercise began with a fence built under the Apongbon Bridge on the CMS-bound bridge, located on Lagos Island off Marina Bus-stop.

The fence, which was still under construction, had been raised by seven to eight coaches on various sections and over 9 feet tall.

A senior engineer in the Federal Ministry of Works, Mrs Musiliat Aloba, led a team of engineers and security operatives on the exercise. She informed reporters that she was acting on instruction from the Lagos State Government.

However, there was an initial misunderstanding with some officials who bore the tags of Toll Royalty Car Park Technologies, as they challenged the process but were informed by the engineer supervising the team to file their complaints to the Federal Ministry of Works.

“I am not directed to speak to anyone; please come to the Federal Ministry of Works,’’ she said.

Mrs Aloba warned residents that the actions are for the betterment of road users in the state.

“When you conceal the bridge, nobody can see what happens under. The Federal Government has lost so much money due to burnt bridges,” she said.

The team went further to demolish fences concealing about 300 metres under the Obalende/Apongbon Flyover Bridge on the CMS-bound carriageway.
