The embattled former lawmaker of Kaduna State, Shehu Sani, has on Friday, sued the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his unlawful detention.

The human right activist and outspoken social media commentator was apprehened and held in EFCC custody for almost three weeks.

Shehu Sani has demanded for his full release from detention and damages from the anti-graft agency and the owner of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda, to the tune of N100m.

The suit was filed by Shehu Sani’s lawyer, Abdul Ibrahim (SAN), according to a “motion under Enforcement of Fundamental Human Rights Procedure in the case between Senator Shehu Sani vs EFCC and ASD Motors.”

Sani was detained by the EFCC for allegedly soliciting and collecting a $25,000 bribe from owner of ASD Motors, Alhaji Sani Dauda, with promises of perverting justice and help with speaking to EFCC concerning some seized vehicles belonging to Alhaji Dauda.

The former Senator denied this charge melted against him. According to him, it is a ploy to defame his integrity and stop him from criticizing the wrongs of the government.

A statement issued by Shehu Sani’s counsel read:

“The statement is false, malicious and aimed at further denigrating the hard-earned image of Senator Shehu Sani. We wish to state without any contradiction that the phone call between Senator Shehu Sani and ASD does not signify any bribery issue.

“The selected cut and join conversations cannot stand as evidence in any court of competent jurisdiction. It is nothing but a desperate attempt to concoct evidence to sustain the ongoing media trial against Senator Shehu Sani.”

The suit which was filed in a Federal High Court in Abuja, will be heard on January 20,2020, by Justice A.B. Mohammed.
