Pregnant Woman Dies Of Lassa Fever In Enugu

The University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Utuku-Ozalla, on Friday, confirmed that a pregnant woman died of Lassa fever at their ward.

This update makes it the second death recorded in Enugu state since the inception of the new year. The first case recorded this year was at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, involving a 75-year-old woman.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr Ifeanyi Agujiobi, disclosed the death of the second victim, a 24-year-old pregnant woman, in a joint press briefing with some health organizations at the state secretariat.

According to the permanent Secretary, out of six suspected cases of Lassa fever in the state, three have been confirmed while two have died, the pregnant woman died on Thursday night.

He explained that the third victim, a female corps member, who just returned from Benue State, overcame the Lassa Fever and is now responding to treatment.

He went on to assure the residents of Enugu state that the scourge has been under control since the first reported case in January.

He further said that the pregnant woman who died from the disease was because she was brought to the health facilities late.
