The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Orlu, Imo State, has been razed down by fire, which was reportedly started by unknown persons believed to be political thugs.

The fire engulfed the building for several hours, as the men from the fire service could not intervene on time. The fire also affected a nearby Orlu Council Secretariat office.

According to the INEC Officials, the inferno destroyed the commission’s highly classified documents and other properties which were worth millions of naira.

The INEC State Public Relations Officer, Emmanuella Oparah, who confirmed the incident to newsmen, also stated that the inferno completely demolished the office, turning it to ashes.

She added that the commission had reported the incident to the police for investigations.

When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, had this to say: “I can confirm the incident to you but the cause of fire outbreak is unknown for now.

“The state Commissioner of Police has dispatched the operatives to the scene of the incident with the view of ascertaining the root cause of the fire on the building.”

This incident has been labelled a premeditated attack, as it was barely a week when some alleged political thugs raided the same INEC office and stopped the collation process during the supplementary election in Orlu/Orsu/Oru East federal constituency and tore the result sheets.
