Amotekun: South-West Governors To Write IG For Gun License

Funsho Akinwale

South-West governors have announced plans to officially write the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, for a gun license to actualize the operation of Amotekun.

Further checks confirmed that the six South-West state executive councils have resolved to meet on Wednesday to discuss the bills on Amotekun corps.

Kola Olawoye, the Ondo State Attorney General, disclosed after the passage of the bill, that each state would apply to the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, for a gun licence for the Amotekun corps.

The six governors of the zone had on January 9, at a summit in Oyo State, agreed to establish Operation Amotekun to address criminal activities in the region.

The Federal Government immediately after the launch declared the outfit illegal.

But after the outcry of many Nigerians and with the swift intervention of Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, and meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, an agreement was reached to give legal backing to the security outfit.
