50 People Under Close Watch In Anambra For Lassa Fever


The Anambra State Government on Tuesday announced that at least 50 persons are under serious observation for Lassa fever in the state.

It was reported that a 25-year-old student of the Nnamdi Azikwe University is the only confirmed case and is being treated at the virology centre in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State capital.

Don Adinuba, Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, stated that the 50 people quarantined are those who had contact with the patient in the preceding 3 weeks in her hometown and university and are being examined by experts.

He added that the government has established two special centres at the Onitsha General Hospital and at the General Hospital at Umueri to handle any Lassa fever case’ He further urged residents to regularly wash hands with soap and to use sanitizer.

Meanwhile, a strange disease has been reported in Oye, Obi, Obi local government in Benue state and is currently being investigated by the Nations Rapid Response Team, supported by the Benue State Ministry of Health.

This was disclosed by the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

According to the NCDC Director-General, Chikwe Ihekweazu, after thorough test had been carried out, Lassa fever and Yellow fever have been ruled out and that they are anticipating the final results while closely monitoring those that have contacted the disease.
