February 14 was the festive burial of the parents of the self-proclaimed leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Rumours claimed that some soldiers arrested memebers of the IPOB who were said to be going for the burial of parents to their leader.

However, the 14th Brigade Headquarter of the Nigerian Army, Ohafia, Abia State, has openly debunked allegations that its soldiers arrested 40 IPOB members on Friday at Ubakala junction in Umuahia South Local Government Area of the state.

All efforts to reach the Commander of 14 Brigade, Brigadier General Solomon Kumapayi, and the Brigade spokesman, Iliya Dauda, for comments on the rumours proved fruitless, but a source in the Army brigade who preferred anonymity denied such allegation.

The military source said that it was the Abia State police that made some arrests not the Nigerian Army.

When the Commissioner of Police, Ene Okon, was contacted by newsmen, he also denied arresting 40 persons. However, he said that they (Police) only arrested four persons for illegal possession of firearms like guns in Umuahia around the busy Okpara Square.

The state Police Chief also explained that there was nothing to identify the suspects as IPOB members, as there was no Identification, unless IPOB is claiming that the four arrested were their members.
