Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Nigeria, the leader of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday, announced a donation of N50 million to fight the Coronavirus pandemic in Biafra land, while noting that outbreak of the virus has put Nigeria to shame.
Kanu who made this known via an audio broadcast made available to ‘The Nation’, stated that all these years of looting, telling people lies of building hospitals has exposed the Nigeria government’s insincerity.
However, he noted that the situation has actually shown IPOB’s unpreparedness to tackle emergencies cases such as the Coronavirus. He, therefore, stated that the contingency fund was from IPOB’s coffers.
He said, “We never knew that the virus is coming, we have commitments all over the world; we are committing initial N50 million to make sure we educate and prepare our people for what is to come.”
He expressed worry over Africa and humanity but stated that he primarily feels concerned for the people of Biafra.
Therefore, he noted that IPOB would budget the sum of N300 million to fight the virus, as the initial N50 million which would be made available will be used to also pay the nurses and doctors that would be hired to do the work.
He further noted that IPOB does not have the hospitals that can sustain the pandemic.
He said, “We will establish one hospital in every state of Biafra including Edo State. We are going to open food store for the people. If you are to confine the people at home, you must make sure they don’t die of hunger. We are even going to feed those who are not IPOB members. This is what advanced countries are doing for their people.”
He stressed that for the sake of its people the IPOB would be sheathing its sword and appealed to the governors and private companies for the quick payment of their workers’ salaries throughout the pandemic period.
Hence, he advised the people to abide by all directives and take precautionary measures to ensure they survived the scourge.
