The Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, during a state broadcast, on Saturday, has ordered a complete lockdown of the state as, part of measures to prevent the novel Coronavirus from entering the state.
Uzodinma who gave the order in the state capital, Owerri, noted that his commitment to protect the lives of the people of the state necessitated the move.
Hence, by the order, all markets are closed and any forms of gatherings including marriage, burial or funeral ceremonies as well as all forms of religious worships in churches and mosques, including crusades and open evangelism are prohibited indefinitely.
Regarding civil and public servants, the governor directed that only those on approved essential duties are to continue work while others are expected to stop work with immediate effect.
He, therefore, noted that combined team of military, police and other security agencies would be deployed to the streets to ensure strict compliance with the directives.
To this end, he directed the law enforcement agencies to mount road blocks at all land borders into the state to ensure those coming in would be screened and given a clean bill of health by officials attached to the check points, before allowed entry.
Uzodinma assured the residents of the State’s preparedness to handle any emergency as a team of specialist doctors are now on ground and well equipped to handle any emergency should the virus finds its way into the state.
Meanwhile, he emphasized that the state would commence training of health educators who would be sent to rural communities to educate the people as well as engage in the distribution of hand sanitisers to all the communities in the state.
He further noted that these measures would be reviewed on weekly basis and if it became necessary to relax them or take more measures, the government would act accordingly.
“I wish to reiterate my earlier advise that the best safety measures against the disease are social distancing, regular washing of hands with soap, sanitising our hands regularly as well as periodic check of body temperature to be sure that it is not above 38 degrees Celsius.” he said.
